Shaping the Future Together: UniWerk Is the winning project of the Freiburg Unicorn Fund

A mobile participation format prevails in the University’s Unicorn Fund initiative. UniWerk was selected as the winner from among 35 strong ideas. As part of Freiburg’s proposal in the Excellence Strategy, it could provide impetus for innovation and transformation across the University from 2027 on.

How can we make the University of Freiburg more resilient, innovative, and fit for the future? This question is at the centre of the Unicorn Fund, a university-wide call for ideas with the potential to transform and improve the University as a system. The most convincing project will be integrated into the University of Freiburg’s proposal to achieve the title of University of Excellence, which will be submitted in November 2025. In the case of success, the winner of the Unicorn Fund would therefore receive funding in this context.

The University invited teams from science and research as well as research management to apply with creative ideas – and the response was huge: Employees from faculties, research institutes, and administration submitted a total of 35 project outlines with bold, practical, and original proposals. ‘I’m impressed by how much passion, curiosity, and far-sightedness is evident in the ideas our colleagues submitted’, says Prof. Dr. Kerstin Krieglstein, Rector of the University of Freiburg. ‘We will continue to profit from this wealth of perspectives on our path of overall university development.’

I’m impressed by how much passion, curiosity, and far-sightedness is evident in the ideas our colleagues submitted. We will continue to profit from this wealth of perspectives on our path of overall university development. The Unicorn Fund is a wonderful example of how much innovative capacity we have in our University community. It wasn’t easy for us to pick just one proposal out of so many good ideas – that speaks for the high quality of the submissions.

The winning project: UniWerk

The project UniWerk was selected from among all submissions. It was submitted by Prof. Dr. Jürgen Kleine-Vehn and Dr. Elke Barbez from the Faculty of Biology and the Cluster of Excellence CIBSS – Centre for Integrative Biological Signalling Studies. The mobile participation and innovation format seeks to provide impetus across the University. From smaller organizational units like working groups and departments to larger structures like faculties and research institutes, UniWerk aims to make a direct impact and support people in preparing their workplace for new challenges. Members of the University will find out more about the specifics of the project as soon as the University submits its proposal in the Excellence Strategy.

If the University of Freiburg is successful with its proposal, it will be entitled to hold the title of University of Excellence starting in 2027. Then UniWerk would receive 300,000 euros in funding over a period of three years.

Excellence thrives on participation

‘The Unicorn Fund is a wonderful example of how much innovative capacity we have in our University community’, emphasizes Krieglstein. ‘It wasn’t easy for us to pick just one proposal out of so many good ideas – that speaks for the high quality of the submissions.’
