Orientation day in the lab

Students of the Droste-Hülshoff-Gymnasium Freiburg visit CIBSS

On their last day of school, the students of the biology course at Droste-Hülshoff-Gymnasium Freiburg took the opportunity to visit us at the Signalhaus in Herdern. The visit started with a welcome lecture by CIBSS Managing Director Dr. Johannes Kaiser, who introduced the basics of biological signalling research, presented different professional fields and career opportunities in the life sciences and talked about the challenges and opportunities of a scientific career, as well as professional opportunities in science management and laboratory operations.

Theory was followed by practice: Under the guidance of Dr. Nicole Gensch, Manager of the Core Facility "Signalling Factory - Cell and Protein Engineering", and her team, the students were able to gain insights into a molecular biology research laboratory, find out what laboratory work can involve and carry out DNA Isolation from saliva samples themselves. As a small souvenir of their visit, the students were given the opportunity to take home the extracted DNA in a necklace.
