Fostering talent and strengthening global networks: Supporting early career researchers through international collaboration at CIBSS

As part of the Freiburg Rising Stars Academy, 6 early career researchers from across Europe, the United States and India visited CIBSS laboratories last year.

From 10 to 15 March 2024, six early career researchers from institutions across Europe, the United States and India participated in a comprehensive research exchange at the cluster of excellence CIBSS – Centre for Integrative Biological Signalling Studies in Freiburg. Hosted by the Freiburg Rising Stars Academy (FRSA), their visit provided hands-on exposure to cutting-edge research and a variety of opportunities for cross-disciplinary networking and collaboration.

The Freiburg Rising Stars Academy (FRSA), an initiative of the University of Freiburg, aims to promote the international exchange of talented young scientists by supporting research stays at the University of Freiburg. Through laboratory visits, symposia and scientific discussions, the programme connects promising researchers with leading experts in their fields and equips them with the tools and networks necessary for a successful international scientific career.

Exploring research at CIBSS

The 6 participants that collaborated with CIBSS researchers through the Freiburg Rising Stars programme were welcomed with an introduction to our research focus, funding opportunities, and state-of-the-art infrastructure. The programme included lab visits and a plant symposium hosted by CIBSS researchers Dr. Elke Barbez, Juniorprofessor Dr. Sjon Hartmann and Prof. Dr. Jürgen Kleine-Vehn, which provided insights into ongoing research projects and opened up oppprtunities for collaboration.
The six participating researchers and their hosts at CIBSS were:

Workshops & scientific discussions

As part of the extensive programme organised by the FRSA team, workshops and fireside chats covered topics such as applying for funding, scientific presentation and career development. A highlight was the debate between junior professor Dr. Sjon Hartman and Prof. Dr. Monika Schönauer on “Battle of the Disciplines: Signals for the Future – Brains and Plants”, which stimulated thought-provoking discussions.

Strengthening scientific networks: Research visits & ongoing collaborations

Several participants extended their engagement with research residencies at CIBSS from May to October 2024. The impact of CIBSS's collaboration with the 2023/2024 cohort of the Freiburg Rising Stars Academy is evident in joint publications, conference presentations and ongoing research initiatives. Promising prospects for long-term collaborations are already taking shape, with participants pursuing Walter Benjamin and Marie Curie fellowship applications to extend their research at CIBSS and the University of Freiburg.
