Freiburg's Medical Center ranks 3rd in Germany with €122.3 million in DFG funding and leads in funding per professor, while its Life Sciences secure 2nd place overall

The tenth edition of the Funding Atlas of the German Research Foundation (DFG) has been published. It illustrates the consistently high level of research performance at the University of Freiburg. This puts the University of Freiburg in 8th place out of 229 universities.

“It is not only the absolute number that is impressive. In terms of the number of professors in the 14 subjects, the University of Freiburg is ranked first among the 40 most successful universities in terms of funding approval, and over 60 percent above the statistical expected value,” says Prof. Dr. Stefan Rensing, Vice Rector for Research and Innovation, in his assessment of the results.

Prof. Dr. Kerstin Krieglstein, Rector of the University of Freiburg

The positive results once again demonstrate the high performance of our University’s scientists and provide a tailwind for the current reviews of the Clusters of Excellence CIBSS and livMatS, as well as the two Cluster of Excellence initiatives ConTrans and Future Forests.

Excellent results in the life sciences and other scientific fields

The University of Freiburg performed particularly well in the life sciences. It came in second in both absolute terms, with a total of €173.2 million in funding, and in relative terms, based on the number of professors. In addition, the DFG Funding Atlas shows that the University of Freiburg is ranked in the top 10 in many other areas, both at the university level and at the level of scientific disciplines.
