He is particularly interested in acute and chronic hepatitis infections, inflammatory bowel disease and liver cancer. He uses advanced methods such as single cell and mass cytometry to analyse complex data sets and develop new therapeutic approaches.

Marco Prinz is a professor at the Institute of Neuropathology in the Department of Neurology and Neurophysiology and was nominated a Highly Cited Researcher for the seventh time. His research focuses on neuroimmunological and neurodegenerative diseases. His "Innate Immunity" research group investigates how the brain responds to changes in tissue integrity, such as in multiple sclerosis (MS) and neurodegeneration. He works closely with various clinical departments to investigate pathological changes in the central and peripheral nervous systems and to improve the diagnosis and treatment of these diseases.

With their highly acclaimed research, both scientists make a significant contribution to scientific progress and the international visibility of CIBSS and the Medical Center – University of Freiburg.
