We demonstrate that A. thaliana produces Magic Spot Nucleotide ppGpp upon bacterial pathogen infection. We use capillary electrophoresis mass spectrometry with stable isotope labeled internal references to achieve attomole sensitivity. ppGpp production is catalyzed by RSH2 and RSH3 which are activated through PAMPs.
