We discovered a mechanism that protects human cells against proteotoxicity caused by dysfunctional mitochondria. It involves upregulation of the chaperone HSPB1 and the immunoproteasome ß-subunit PSMB9, which promotes protein degradation by enhancing proteasome activity at the site of mitochondria.
