The leaf sheath promotes prolonged flooding protection by giving rise to specialized adventitious roots

Adventitious roots are stem-borne roots that provide plants with additional oxygen, water and nutrient uptake. Here we describe how a specialized type of aquatic adventitious root is initiated and could aid wetland species such as deepwater rice in surviving prolonged and sequential flooding events.
