Wolfgang Driever elected as new EMBO Member

The developmental biologist and one of the CIBSS Speakers receives this honour for his scientific achievements in the life sciences

Wolfgang Driever, Professor of Developmental Biology and Co-Speaker of the CIBSS – Centre for Integrative Biological Signalling Studies at the University of Freiburg, has received the lifetime honour of an EMBO Membership. EMBO is an organization of over 1800 leading researchers that promotes excellence in the life sciences, and Driever is one of 63 distinguished scientists joining its ranks this year.

Driever and his research group study the molecular mechanisms that control development and function of the nervous system. He combines different techniques, such as genetics, genomics, experimental embryology, and live imaging to understand the complex signalling networks that regulate growth and function of neurons in the brain and nerves. Wolfgang Driever is the fifth CIBSS researcher who is an EMBO member: He now joins his colleagues Asifa Akhtar, Thomas Laux, Nikolaus Pfanner and Michael Reth in taking part in this initiative’s activities.

“I am very glad to be an elected EMBO Member and will contribute to its role in shaping European science and science policy,” says Driever. “Coming from Freiburg University, part of Eucor, it is exciting to strengthen the links with scientists and institutions across the life sciences disciplines in Europe. “

EMBO has the mission to promote excellence in the life sciences, to support researchers at all career levels and stimulates scientific exchange. EMBO Members actively participate in EMBO initiatives, for example by serving on the council and committees, by mentoring young scientists, or supporting activities such as the promotion of sound science policy. New members are nominated and elected by the current EMBO members.
