Gene duplication often leads to paralogs with distinct functions. Yang et al. show that paralogs NRBP1 and NRBP2 oppositely regulate L1 retrotransposition by modulating L1 mRNA–ORF1p association, with NRBP2 promoting NRBP1 degradation.
