We discovered a unique mitochondrial quality control pathway in Trypanosoma brucei, which is triggered by depletion of the protein import receptor ATOM69, specific for import of hydrophobic substrates. The pathway requires release of the ubiquitin-like protein TbUbl1 from the nucleus to the cytosol.
